CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Jess, Wildcat and Bodine rode down the hill at daylight, with Shadow leading the way. Jess decided to keep the horses at a pace that Shadow could easily keep up with because he’d sense any threat or danger before any of them would. The wolf seemed to understand and he ran alongside Sharps, sniffing the air for anything odd.

They rode for several hours, stopping to let the horses and Shadow rest. Jess had checked Wildcat’s leg wound before leaving the cave and the stitches were holding, but the wound looked like it might be festering a little. He planned to make a stop in the next town so she could be seen by a doctor.

After a few more hours of riding, Jess sat atop his horse scanning the town of Driftwood from a distance while the rest of them waited patiently. He put the spyglass away and glanced down at Shadow.

“You go in ahead of us, boy, and check things out,” he told him. Shadow barked once and took off running toward the town.

“He actually understands what you tell him?” asked Wildcat as she felt her leg wound. It was tender to the touch.

“He seems to somehow, although I can’t explain it,” said Jess as he turned to Bodine. “Let’s be ready for anything when we ride in there. There is no way of knowing for sure how many bounty hunters are already looking for Wildcat.” All three of them pulled out rifles and levered rounds into them before Jess started the horses at a walk toward town.
